They Were Sent to Explore. Now, They’re Being Asked to Die.
The first manned mission to Mars was supposed to mark humanity’s greatest achievement. But when strange bursts of radiation flicker from the edges of the solar system, NASA makes a chilling decision: use the Mars crew as bait—sacrificing them to keep the incoming threat away from Earth.
What they don’t know is that this enemy has never lost a war.
A race of genocidal aliens has been systematically wiping out intelligent life for thousands of years. Now, they have discovered Earth. The Mars team fights for survival on a planet that was never meant to sustain them—but how do you fight an enemy you can’t even see coming?
Ben Allspot never signed up to be a hero. Leaving Earth for a job on the Moon was supposed to be an escape—a way to outrun his past, his addiction, and the pain of the life he left behind. But as the alien threat looms closer, Ben realizes that the only thing he still cares about—his family on Earth—is about to be erased.

An often impressive debut of an author in deft control of a mind- and galaxy-spanning SF premise. -- Kirkus Review
I was born in New Orleans and spent my early years under the strict and terrifying guidance of the nuns at Sacred Heart Grammar School. To this day, I refuse to let my wife wear a black-and-white dress. Some fears never fade.
High school at Holy Savior Menard Central (yes, that’s really the name) taught me an important life lesson: never trust a man called “Coach.” Somehow, I survived and made it to LSU, where I had so much fun that graduating in just five and a half years was one of the worst mistakes of my life. If I had known what I know now, I’d still be enrolled—10,000 undergraduate hours deep and several million dollars in debt.
Instead, I found myself in the real world, where, despite my best efforts at sabotage, my small business in Memphis continues to thrive. At 70, I still show up every day to shake my fist at employees and pretend I’m in charge.
These days, I live in a small house in the woods with my wife, three cats, three dogs, twelve chickens, and a few tropical fish. The dogs occasionally acknowledge my existence.

Excellent story about the human condition
This is an “almost apocalyptic” story about science, human strengths and weaknesses. It was very entertaining and technologically interesting. I strongly recommend the book.

This is seriously one of the best, if not THE best, science fiction novels I have ever read, and I have been reading them since I was 8 (now I am 71).
That was a wonderfully different well written book. It did not disappoint. I kind of wished I had just started reading it.
